Is there anything better than spending hot July days outside with the whole family? Interested in participating in a grassroots athletic, social and cultural event? Then the 2018 Southern Alberta Summer Games are for you! Any and all Lethbridge residents are encouraged to sign up, because with over 20 events, there is a spot for everyone! What’s so special about partaking in an event like this?
“It’s just an overall great experience for everyone involved. Its grassroots, meaning it’s a friendly competition between local people participating in local events. Whether you’re nine or ninety, there is an event for you. Southern Alberta has a great sense of pride and family, and that’s really what we’re trying to promote with these Games” says Regional Director Jordan Calladine. This year’s events come from a large spectrum of sports and activities, ranging from ball hockey to pickle ball, bowling to motocross, photography to rugby, trapshooting to cribbage and more.
Participating in community events like the Southern Alberta Summer Games has too many benefits to name! Apart from the social and cultural development from taking in such an event, regular physical activity is proven to improve the three aspects of health. It reduces the risk of heart conditions, keeps you in shape and helps instill a work ethic in people that may not have been developed otherwise. Physical activity increases the positive feelings in the body and decreases stress, anxiety, and so on. Sport participation not only has proven benefits for youth, but has many for adults too. According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, three out of every four adults who are thirty years and older and participating in sports today played sports in their youth. Being physically active benefits everybody, no matter their age.
If the physical benefits of organized sport and physical activity aren’t enough, general physical activity is associated with the development and maturity of cognitive skills, improved academic success, comprehensive and concentration habits, communication and problem-solving skills and more. Overall, being involved and active in sport is great for everyone in the family, not just the kids!
Ever since the first installment of the Games in 1970 in the Town of Pincher Creek, the Games have instilled and promoted the following objectives:
Provide an opportunity for the greatest number of people to participate in an enjoyable grassroots sports festival
Provide a unique opportunity for different sports, ages and skill levels
Provide a meaningful and continued opportunity for underdeveloped and developed sports
Provide “showcase” opportunities for identification of young athletes for higher training and competition
Complement sport aspects with appropriate cultural and novelty events
Provide an opportunity for volunteers to develop skills in coaching and officiating
Encourage collaboration with other sport related organizations
The 49th edition of the Games will draw over 2000 athletes to the area, and will be taking place Wednesday July 4th through to Saturday July 7th, 2018 in the Town of Taber and its Municipal District. Opening Ceremonies begin with a barbeque at 5:30pm on Wednesday, which is then followed by the ever-popular Athlete March and Opening Remarks! Registration is open now until Wednesday June 6th, 2018 at 12pm. To register, go to www.lethbridgesportcouncil.ca/SASG or to the Team Lethbridge Office on the 2nd level of Nicholas Sheran Ice Centre.
