Lethbridge, Alberta: In a winter showcase of Alberta’s developing athletes, Wood Buffalo will welcome the Alberta Winter Games (AWG) from February 16-19, 2018. Introduced in 1986, the Games provide a competitive opportunity for provincial level athletes aged 11-17 to compete in a Multi-sports Games.
In addition to the competition that the Games welcome, there will also be additional activities for participants and spectators to enjoy. Local artists and performers will delight guests with free activities through the weekend, and there will be guided tours of the ‘Total Aboriginal Interpretive Trail’ for visitors to learn and enjoy. All guests and athletes are invited and encouraged to attend the Opening Ceremonies which will take place on Friday, February 16, 2018, at 7:00 PM. The Games Society has announced that 2-time Olympic gold medalist Alexandre Bilodeau will be the emcee for the ceremonies. For fans and family from home, the Opening Ceremonies will be live streamed.
Wood Buffalo will be welcoming over 2,800 athletes, coaches and officials from across Alberta to represent one of eight regional zones. Athletes will compete in 24 different sports.
Of the 200 athletes and coaches representing Zone 1, 85 of those participants are from Lethbridge. Susan Eymann, Executive Director of the Lethbridge Sport Council noted, “The Alberta Games provide an excellent opportunity for athletes to showcase their skills on a provincial scale. Seeing the different communities in Alberta supporting such talented, developing athletes is encouraging to see; especially the substantial number of athletes from Lethbridge and the surrounding area.”
As the games get underway, results will be posted on the AWG website, www.albertasport.com/alberta-games under ‘Results’. On social media, athletes and spectators are encouraged to use the hashtag #itsgamestime.
