July 2016 Welcomes Competition for Alberta Athletes
Alberta is not only starting to see the weather heat up as summer has just recently arrived, but is also starting to see the athletic competition getting hot too! With July rolling in, so are athletes to Leduc and Lethbridge in a showcase of Alberta’s talented athletes. With both the Alberta Summer Games and the Southern Alberta Summer Games, there is ample opportunity to watch athletes participate in their favorite sports. The Southern Alberta Summer Games will be held right here in Lethbridge from July 6th-9th, while the Alberta Summer Games will be taking place July 14th-17th in Leduc.
With the Southern Alberta Summer Games being more of a grass root, family oriented competition that allows participants from ages 6-80 to compete in their sport/activity of choice, the Alberta Games focuses its attention on developing athlete profiles. Athletes and coaches from across the province arrive at one location to compete in their respected sport by representing one of the eight zones that span across Alberta. These elite athletes are between the ages of 11-17. With 14 different sporting events (in the summer games) there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The Alberta Summer and Winter Games are held every two year and see over 3000 athletes, coaches and officials participating. In order for all of this to take place, around 2000 volunteers are needed with over 100 sponsors! The Alberta Games have four main goals they take pride in pursuing:
- Motivating Albertans to achieve a higher level of physical fitness through active participation in sport.
- Develop the cultural and social components as an enhancement to Game in Alberta.
- Showcase the talents of Albertans in a wide range of sports and activities.
- Provide host communities with a legacy of experience volunteers and upgraded facilities.*
Did you know that the above four goals were applied here in Lethbridge in 2012 when Lethbridge was the host for the Alberta Summer Games? This year in Leduc, there will be 176 participants (coaches, athletes, etc.) from Zone 1. Of the 176 participants, 69 (39% of the Zone 1 athletes) of them are from Lethbridge!
The Lethbridge Sport Council would like to recognize and congratulate all of the participants in the Alberta Summer Games, particularly the participants representing Zone 1 from Lethbridge and surrounding area!
