In Recognition
Dr. Gary Bowie, as the founding chair of both the Lethbridge Sports Bid Committee and the Lethbridge Sport Council, championed the belief that hosting local events strengthens sport and enhances community. The Dr. Gary Bowie Sport Event Excellence Award, established in 2019, honours Dr. Bowie’s instrumental role in shaping Lethbridge’s strong sport hosting culture. This award recognizes individuals, organizations, or events whose contributions uphold that vision and continue to build Lethbridge’s reputation for excellence in sport hosting.
Shaun Ward has long been recognized as a passionate and respected champion of community sport in Lethbridge, both during his years as a City of Lethbridge Alderman and as an engaged citizen. In honour of his dedication and leadership, the Sport Champion Award was named after him to recognize those who make a lasting impact on the community sport sector. The Shawn Ward Sport Champion lifetime achievement award reflects Shaun’s legacy of innovation, influence, and commitment to strengthening sport in Lethbridge.
Knud Petersen has been a valued member of the Lethbridge Sport Council board since 2019 and has dedicated decades to supporting sport in Lethbridge in many roles. In recognition of his passion and commitment, the Spirit in Sport Award was renamed in his honour in 2015 after he was the inaugural recipient in 2010. The Knud Petersen Spirit in Sport award continues to celebrate community members who embody Knud’s values of dedication, sportsmanship, and love of sport, ensuring his legacy lives on.
Carol Thibert, a founding member of the Lethbridge Sport Council, played a pivotal role in establishing the organization and shaping its early direction. In recognition of her dedication and lasting contributions to sport in our community, the YMCA of Lethbridge partnered with the Sport Council to install a bike rack in her honour.
