Lethbridge Junior Football Club starting in Lethbridge
Lethbridge, Alberta: For immediate release: October 8, 2020
A local group of volunteers has been hard at work. A new football club is in the process of starting in Lethbridge. The Lethbridge Junior Football Club will be part of the Canadian Junior Football League. This club will create a home for local athletes to continue their football dreams, as well as their education, and will attract student athletes to Lethbridge.
The Canadian Junior Football League, or CJFL, is a national amateur Canadian football league consisting of 18 teams currently playing in five provinces across Canada. The teams compete annually for the Canadian Bowl. Many CJFL players have gone on to professional football careers in the CFL and elsewhere. The CJFL’s formal mission statement is:
“The Canadian Junior Football League provides the opportunity for young men aged 17 – 22 to participate in highly competitive post-high school football that is unique to Canada. The goal of the league is to foster community involvement and yield a positive environment by teaching discipline, perseverance and cooperation. The benefits of the league are strong camaraderie, national competition, and life-long friends.”
Recently, the Saskatoon Hilltops welcomes the first ever female athlete to compete in the CJFL.
The Lethbridge Junior Football Club’s application with the Prairie Football Conference has been received, and logistical discussions are underway.
The new club is proceeding with the support of the City of Lethbridge, local MLA Nathan Neudorf, and the Lethbridge Sport Council. The team’s home field will be the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium.
The Lethbridge Junior Football Club’s inaugural season is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2022 and the team will be called the Lethbridge Vipers. They are still looking for volunteer board members at this time.
