Mayor Blaine Hyggen issued a challenge last year to help out local food banks during the holiday season. This weekend, the stage will return as several Lethbridge community partners will battle against City staff in a hockey game for a good cause.
The Mayor’s 2022 Community Hockey Challenge is set to take place on Sunday, November 27 at 4 p.m. at the ATB Centre’s east/blue arena. The game will benefit the Interfaith Food Bank and the Lethbridge Food Bank. Those wanting to attend are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food, while monetary donations will be also accepted.
“We had such a great event last year and raised about $4,500 in food donations and financial contributions,” says Mayor Hyggen, who will again suit up as goalie for the City of Lethbridge team. “Our community continually impresses me with their dedication to important causes, so we encourage people to come out this weekend to support our food banks.”
Full equipment is required, but this will be a fun-themed, non-contact, full three-period game.
The Community Partners roster includes several assistant coaches from the Lethbridge Hurricanes staff, ‘Canes play-by-play announcer Dustin Forbes, Mike Warkentin from Exhibition Park and Paul Kingsmith from Lethbridge College. The City of Lethbridge roster features players from across a variety of departments, including Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services and the Lethbridge Police Service.
Guest coaches include Deputy Premier, Minister of Infrastructure and MLA of Lethbridge East, Nathan Neudorf, Deputy LPS Chief Gerald Grobmeier, City Councillors Mark Campbell and Jenn Schmidt-Rempel, as well as Rob Miyashiro, Executive Director of the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization. U of L student Carley Jewell will be the guest referee.
Cole Stefiuk from KISS 107.7’s morning show will be the game day host and local performer Tsuaki Marule will sing the national anthem in Blackfoot, French and English.
Intermission entertainment is being organized by the Lethbridge Sport Council and will feature para hockey, a Timbits hockey game, a ringette shootout and two figure skating performances.
