A game-changer: multi-use outdoor court opens in Legacy Park
City of Lethbridge News Update
Lethbridge’s newest play space is officially ready for users! The outdoor sports court is located in Legacy Park.
The rink-style facility boasts a concrete surface and includes painted lines, side and end boards, screening, players benches and penalty boxes. The 185’ by 85’ court can accommodate a variety of sports including roller and street hockey, lacrosse and roller derby. The court is not intended for skateboarding or biking and will not accommodate ice in the winter.
The initiative was included in the 2022-2031 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). A May 2023 amendment reduced the initial scope from two courts to one court at a reduced size. The change allowed the project to remain within its budget.
Public consultation helped shape the court. Community sport groups, including Lethbridge Sport Council, Roller Hockey Lethbridge, the Lethbridge Lacrosse Association and the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild, provided valuable input. These organizations currently use indoor public recreation facilities. They identified a pressing need for an outdoor court, which is both bookable and available for all members of the community.
"The court meets the growing demand for outdoor recreational spaces and serves as a hub for various sports,” says GM of Parks, Blair Richter. "The facility will draw people from the city and beyond, providing a unique venue for sports participation at all ages."
The first of its kind Lethbridge facility will boost the city’s recreational and social opportunities. The court is inclusive and open to the public for spontaneous play and pick-up games. It will also be available for bookings to host group practices, games and skill development beginning in summer 2025.
