Catching up with Summer Games athletes from 2012

Where are they now?

It’s been seven years since Lethbridge hosted the 2012 Alberta Summer Games. Where are they now updates are being posted on the 2020 Games social media accounts.

For many athletes, the 2012 Games was the highest level of competition they would achieve. For others, it would become a part of their athletic journey.

Some continued to compete in the same sport, while others changed sports completely.

The 2012 Games Zone 1 Sunny South team was 250 athletes strong, ages 11 to 17 in the Train to Train stage of Sport for Life. 100 of those athletes trained in Lethbridge.

University of Lethbridge Pronghorn alumni Eden Hoff and Jill Tataryn stayed the course continuing to play rugby. Retired from the Pronghorns, Tataryn now spends her time playing spikeball and club rugby.

Swimmer Kyla Leibel has continued success at a national level. Leibel most recently competed at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Pronghorn alumni Aaron Hernandez competed in multiple track and field disciplines later specializing in triple jump. Zack James, a 2012 beach volleyball competitor, went on to play collegiate volleyball.

Several athletes felt the draw of the strong local rugby community. Playing rugby is Jordan Calladine (2012 swimmer), Hailey Driscoll (2012 track and field), and Davin Evanson (2012 football). Grayson Constable (2012 athletics) plays NCAA hockey.

Favourite Games memories include “setting a provincial record”, “a comeback win against whichever zone it was”, “meeting a bunch of new people”, and “definitely the food”.
