Celebrating Sport Opportunities for People with Disabilities in Lethbridge
Posted on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024~ International Day of Persons with Disabilities
On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we recognize the power of sport to unite, empower, and create opportunities for all. In Lethbridge, a range of programs works to ensure that physical or cognitive disabilities are not barriers to enjoying the benefits of physical activity and belonging. From dedicated initiatives like Special Olympics, Para Sports, and Blind/Adapted Sports to inclusive practices within local sport organizations, Lethbridge’s sporting community works to foster a culture where everyone can thrive.
Special Olympics: Building Skills and Community
Special Olympics Lethbridge offers programs tailored for individuals with intellectual disabilities, promoting an active lifestyle and fostering a strong sense of community. Their initiatives cater to all ages, from youth programs to competitive and recreational sport for adults.
Athletes can enjoy year-round activities, including basketball and soccer in the summer and figure skating and five-pin bowling in the winter. In addition to sports, the organization provides:
Unified Sports: Where athletes with and without disabilities train and compete together.
Athlete Leadership Opportunities: Programs empowering athletes to take on roles like coaching, mentorship, or public speaking.
Health Programs: Offering wellness and fitness resources tailored to the unique needs of participants.
Special Olympics Lethbridge exemplifies the belief that sport is for everyone. It not only builds physical skills but also creates a network of support and friendships that last a lifetime.
Para Sport: A World of Possibilities
Para sports are open to individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities, offering options that range from outdoor adventures to competitive team sport.
Lacrossing Barriers - Based in Calgary, Lacrossing Barriers offers adaptive lacrosse programs in Lethbridge. Their mission is to give everyone the opportunity to play. In the winter of 2025, Lacrossing barriers will be offering a program at Park Meadows Baptist Church Gymnasium.
Adaptable Outdoor Recreation Society - For those who love nature, this organization provides accessible hiking, fishing, and paddling opportunities for athletes aged 5 and up. These activities are designed to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy the outdoors in a safe and inclusive way.
Wheelchair Basketball - Lethbridge’s wheelchair basketball program welcomes both recreational and competitive athletes. Drop-in sessions provide a relaxed environment for beginners, with equipment available for those who need it. On the competitive side, the Lethbridge Steamers represent the city in tournaments, fostering teamwork and skill development.
Challenger Baseball - Challenger Baseball provides an opportunity for children, youth and adults with cognitive and/or physical disabilities to participate in baseball at a level structured to their abilities. Buddies are assigned to each player to help provide a safe and enjoyable experience and to assist players. In Lethbridge, Challenger Baseball is run by Lethbridge Little League.
Para Ice Hockey - Para ice hockey, sometimes known as sledge hockey, is an inclusive sport open to athletes with and without physical impairments. Alberta Health Services supports this program, which encourages athletes to enjoy the fast-paced excitement of hockey in a modified, accessible format. At the present time, Lethbridge is in need of an individual or group willing to spearhead para-ice hockey to make it an ongoing program available for participants. Blind and Adapted Sports
Athletes with visual impairments or blindness have access to a wide range of sport and recreational activities in Lethbridge, thanks to the efforts of dedicated organizations.
Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind (ASRAB) - Since 1975, ASRAB has been a leader in promoting active lifestyles for individuals with visual impairments. Their diverse programs span both summer and winter seasons and include activities like: Dragon boating, Line dancing, Winter walking club, Soccer, and other team sports. These programs go beyond physical activity, fostering social connections and independence among athletes.
Lethbridge Association of the Blind - Locally, the Lethbridge Association of the Blind organizes a bowling league from September to April, complete with transportation options for athletes who face mobility challenges. Beyond sports, the organization also hosts community-building events like barbecues and annual walks, ensuring that participants feel connected and supported year-round.
Tetra Society - Tetra assists people with disabilities to achieve independent and fulfilling lives. The solutions created often satisfy a need that could not commercially filled or was cost-prohibitive. Our gadgets span from the workplace, at-home modifications, and for sport and leisure.
Inclusivity in Traditional Sport Organizations
In addition to programs dedicated solely to athletes with different abilities, many local sport organizations have made strides to ensure that their programming is accessible to all. These efforts provide individuals with disabilities the chance to participate alongside their peers, fostering a sense of inclusion and camaraderie within the broader sport community. Welcoming individuals with disabilities into traditional sport organizations creates a sense of unity and removes barriers.
Wrestling - The local wrestling club is creating inclusive environments for athletes of all abilities. Coaches are trained to adapt techniques and drills to meet the needs of participants with physical or cognitive challenges, focusing on individual growth and skill development. Wrestling’s emphasis on strength, strategy, and determination makes it an empowering sport for all athletes.
Skating - Lethbridge’s skating clubs offer CanSkate and STARSkate programs, and welcome athletes with disabilities into their classes. Coaches and program assistance work with athletes and families to adapt lessons, whether it’s providing additional support during on-ice training or tailoring the pace of instruction. Skating clubs often collaborate with programs like Special Olympics or adaptive recreation initiatives to ensure inclusivity.
Archery - The Lethbridge Bowbenders Archery Club welcomes individuals with disabilities. Archery’s focus on precision and concentration makes it an accessible and rewarding activity for many. With adaptive equipment, such as modified bows or supports for athletes with limited mobility, archery provides an opportunity for participants to achieve personal milestones and compete at their level of ability.
Sport for All, A Community Built on Inclusivity
On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we celebrate the resilience and talent of athletes with disabilities, as well as the efforts of the organizations and volunteers who make inclusive sport possible. Despite these efforts, a significant challenge persists: many families and athletes are unaware of the programs available. To address this, the Lethbridge Sport Council provides resources like their online Sport Directory and SportFest, designed to connect individuals to the right opportunities and help them navigate options. Whether you’re interested in trying a new sport, need help with transportation or funding, or want to connect with others in the community, we’re here to help. Check out the Lethbridge Sport Council website or contact us to learn more and get involved.
