Coaching Kids Of All Abilities Resource
Coaching Kids of All Abilities is a collection of online programs that teaches coaches and youth activity leaders how to create inclusive environments in order to facilitate a positive first sport and recreation experience for youth of all abilities.
Based on research by the Canadian Disability Participation Project (CDPP), the majority of people living with a disability do not participate in sufficient sport and exercise to achieve health benefits. Further research conducted by the CDPP determined that low sport and exercise participation rates and high dropout rates are largely due to the absence of experiencing quality participation. Quality sport participation is achieved when athletes with a disability view their involvement in sport as satisfying and enjoyable, and experience outcomes that they consider important (as per the Blueprint for Building Quality Participation in Sport for Children, Youth, and Adults with a Disability).
Additional research shows that, for kids with disabilities, positive first experiences in sport and recreation help them stay active for life. That’s why it is crucial for coaches and youth activity leaders to include participants of all abilities, but unfortunately, many do not know how.
In partnership with subject matter experts including Sport For Life Society, Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability, Canucks Autism Network, Coaching Association of Canada and Défi sportif AlterGo, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities developed Coaching Kids of All Abilities to help educate and inspire coaches and youth activity leaders to develop inclusive programming, making sport and physical activity accessible for all kids of all abilities!
