Did You Know - Artistic Swimming
This originally appeared in the February edition of the City of Lethbridge Recreation and Culture Guide
A Sport of Creativity, Unity and Strength
Do you have a passion for the arts but also a drive for athletic performance? Artistic Swimming, originally known as Ornamental Swimming and Synchronized Swimming, began in the 1920's in Canada, where it later joined the Olympic Games program in 1984 through solo and duet performances. Across Alberta, swimmers can join recreational programs, competitive programs or join swimmer camps to cultivate excellence, collaboration, integrity and innovation. (Canada Artistic Swimming, 2019)
Artistic swimming offers a chance for athletes to develop strength in swimming skills while fostering creative expression in a positive supportive environment. Here’s what makes the sport so unique:
- Creative and Emotional Expression: Experience a combination of both arts and athletics in one while growing in a positive environment.
- Advanced Aquatic Strength: Swimmers build incredible strength in the water to display impressive movements.
- Precision, Control and Endurance: Group training must be created in meticulous preparation to perform precise synchronization.
- Unity, Timing and Trust in the Water: Athletes learn and adapt to underwater movement of lifts, acrobatics and transitions.
- Community and Group Orientated: While learning in a supportive environment, artistic swimmers thrive on friendship to create powerful group performances.
The Art of Athletic Performance
Artistic swimming offers a combination of rigorous athletic skills and the joy of curated expression though performance to allow athletes access to a sport of fun and inclusion. Learn with the recreational program or train competitively to reach the International level or Masters Worlds!
Why Try Artistic Swimming?
Through team community, artistic swimming offers full-body strength training by performing through artistry and control. If you are interested in beginning your journey, there are recreational programs beginning this month here in Lethbridge.
