Did You Know - Judo
This article originally appeared in the October edition of the City of Lethbridge Recreation and Culture Guide
Judo is a martial art and Olympic sport built around technique, timing, balance, and control. While throws are one of the most recognizable parts of the sport, there is much more happening than meets the eye.
Athletes, known as judoka, use a combination of standing and groundwork techniques to gain control of an opponent and create scoring opportunities. Success in judo depends on skill, awareness, and the ability to react quickly rather than simply relying on strength.
How Does a Match Work?
The goal in judo is to score an ippon, the highest score in a match. An ippon ends the contest immediately. A waza-ari is awarded when a technique does not fully meet the criteria for ippon. Two waza-ari equal an ippon and end the match.
It’s About Technique, Not Just Strength
Judo is often about using movement efficiently. Athletes work to disrupt an opponent’s balance, create an opening, and use timing and positioning to complete a technique. Strength can certainly help, but leverage, coordination, reaction time, and control all play a major role in how successfully a technique is performed.
A Few Terms to Know
- Judoka - A person who practices judo.
- Dojo - The place where judo is practiced.
- Tatami - The mat used for training and competition.
- Ippon - A full score that immediately ends the match.
- Waza-ari - A score awarded when a technique does not fully meet the criteria for ippon. Two waza-ari equal an ippon.
Why Try Judo?
Judo offers a mix of physical activity, skill development, and problem-solving. Training can help athletes develop coordination, balance, fitness, confidence, and discipline while learning how to work respectfully with training partners. Because technique and timing are such important parts of the sport, judo can challenge both the body and the mind.
