National Seniors Day: Staying Active, Connected, and Involved
October 1st is National Seniors Day, a time to recognize and celebrate older adults across Canada and the many ways they continue to contribute to our families, communities, workplaces, and society. The day has been officially recognized in Canada since 2011 and is an opportunity to show appreciation while also highlighting the importance of staying active, connected, and engaged throughout life.
In Lethbridge, there are many ways for older adults to stay active, try something new, and connect with others. From fitness classes and walking groups to pickleball, lawn bowling, golf, and community programs; there are options for a wide range of interests and ability levels.
Staying Active at Every Age
Physical activity can look different for everyone. For some, it may mean joining a sport or fitness class, while for others it might be a walk with a friend, gardening, or trying a new recreational activity.
The Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization (LSCO) offers a variety of fitness classes and sports, including badminton, table tennis, pickleball, golf, yoga, Tai Chi, spin, strength training, and more. Programs are designed for different fitness levels and provide opportunities to stay active while also connecting with others.
Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre also provides a wide range of recreational and fitness opportunities. Its Fitness 55 Club includes cardio and strength equipment designed with older adults in mind, while other programs include line dancing, yoga, pickleball, floor curling, carpet bowling, bocce, golf, and group fitness.
Try a Local Sport
Lethbridge is home to a number of sport organizations that make it easy to stay involved or try something new.
The Lethbridge Lawn Bowling Club welcomes players of all ages and experience levels at Ted Petrunia Park. Equipment is provided, and new players can access introductory lessons to help get them started.
Pickleball is another popular option locally, with opportunities available through organizations such as LSCO and other community facilities. LSCO’s program emphasizes social interaction, exercise, and fun for adults aged 55 and older.
Henderson Lake parkrun offers a free, weekly 5K every Saturday morning at Henderson Lake Park. Participants can walk, jog, or run at their own pace, making it an accessible way to stay active while connecting with others in the community.
For those interested in something different, the Dragon Association of Southern Alberta (DASA) provides opportunities to get involved in dragon boating through training, events, and community programming.
Other options to explore in Lethbridge include walking and running groups, boxing, horseshoes, golf, and recreational leagues. The Lethbridge Sport Council Sport Directory is a great place to explore local organizations and find an activity that fits your interests.
Celebrate National Seniors Day
National Seniors Day is also a chance to recognize the older adults in our own lives. The Government of Canada suggests simple ways to celebrate, such as spending time together, taking a walk, helping with errands, or simply just reaching out to say thank you.
Whether you’re trying a new sport, joining a class, heading out for a walk, or connecting with family; there are plenty of ways to stay active and involved in Lethbridge.
This October 1, take some time to celebrate the older adults who help make our community stronger and explore the many opportunities available to keep moving, connecting, and participating.
