Did You Know - Synchronized Skating

A Sport of Unity, Precision, and Performance
If you’re looking for a sport that combines the artistry of figure skating with the excitement of team performance, synchronized skating (often called synchro) may be the perfect fit. First developed in the 1950s, synchro has grown into a worldwide discipline with teams ranging from beginner to elite. Here’s what makes it stand out:
- Teamwork on Ice: Teams of 8–20 skaters perform choreographed routines set to music, moving as one in formations such as circles, lines, blocks, and wheels.
- Required Elements: Like singles or pairs skating, synchro has technical requirements—such as intersections, lifts, and spins—that are judged on execution, difficulty, and artistry.
- Precision and Speed: Skaters must maintain unison while performing complex transitions at high speeds, demanding both athleticism and focus.
- Costumes and Expression: Performances combine sport with artistry, using music, choreography, and costumes to enhance the theme.
- International Stage: Synchronized skating is recognized by the International Skating Union (ISU) and has its own World Championships, and hopes to one day be in the Olympic Winter Games.
A Sport for Every Level
From recreational teams that focus on fun and friendship to elite teams competing on the world stage, synchro welcomes skaters of many ages and abilities.
Why Try Synchronized Skating?
It builds skating skills, fosters teamwork, and creates lifelong friendships. Athletes learn discipline, rhythm, and trust while experiencing the thrill of performing together. While it is too late to join a team for this season, now is a great time to join a skating program at your level to get your skills ready!
