(Lethbridge, Alberta) – The Lethbridge 2020 Alberta Summer Games Society is pleased to share the details of the 2020 Games Legacy Fund designed to support not-for-profit sport and cultural organizations with activities in and around the city of Lethbridge.
“Lethbridge has the most wonderful volunteers, and their work is always appreciated. On their behalf, I am pleased to announce that all their efforts to provide the Games will result in a financial legacy of $250,000 that will directly benefit our community. Yes, we were all extremely disappointed that issues related to the COVID pandemic prevented us from holding these Games in 2020 and again in 2021. However, we are thrilled to have cash left in our account that was gathered by our volunteers’ fundraising, casinos, and sponsors who have now left their sponsorships with us to support this legacy. Your Games Society is now accepting applications to use these funds to support our local sport and cultural organizations.” said Rick Blakeley, President of the Lethbridge 2020 Alberta Summer Games Society.
The purpose of the 2020 Games Legacy Fund is to provide financial support to:
- assist in the development of sport and culture pursuits in Lethbridge,
- capital projects/facility upgrades,
- assist in the development of athletes and artists,
- provide coach and officiating mentoring and training,
- organizational development,
- equipment and supplies, and
- promote their sport to potential new members
The Lethbridge 2020 Alberta Summer Games was postponed to 2021, then cancelled outright as a result of the uncertainty with the pandemic. Approximately 3000 participants were to compete in 14 sports requiring over 2000 volunteers for the four-day event.
Several local supporters have graciously transferred their financial sponsorship in support of the 2020 Games Legacy Fund. Thank you to Gold Sponsor: Hungarian Canadian Cultural Society and Lethbridge College; Silver Sponsors: Cavendish Farms, MacKillop Insurance, Servus Credit Union, Westland Insurance, and Wawanesa Insurance; Bronze Sponsors: Scotiabank, Allan Friesen-Silverberg Group and New West Truck Centres; and Friends of the Games: CUPE 408, Diana Sim, Dominion Lending, Equitable Life of Canada, and Signature Dental.
