Recent toasts a good reminder of the work being done at the grassroots level
Dear editor,
In a world where many headlines focus on challenges and conflict, it was refreshing to read the recent “Toast” submissions in the Lethbridge Herald recognizing the positive sport contributions being made in our community. The Lethbridge Sport Council couldn’t agree more.
Every day, often without recognition, volunteers, coaches, officials, board members, and community leaders invest their time and energy to create opportunities for children and youth through sport. Their efforts help young people learn new skills, build friendships, gain confidence, and discover what they are capable of achieving.
While wins and championships may grab attention, the real impact of community sport is often found elsewhere. It is the young person who finds a sense of belonging, the athlete who learns resilience through setbacks, the teammate who develops leadership skills, or the child who simply discovers the joy of being active and having fun. Success should be measured by seeing participants finish a season a little more confident, connected, and capable than when they started.
I’d also like to recognize the parents, grandparents, and family members who drive to practices and cheer from the stands. Their support plays an important role in a young person’s sport experience, helping build memories that last long after the season ends.
Lethbridge is fortunate to have a strong sport community that continues to invest in the development of young people and the wellbeing of our community. The recent toasts were a welcome reminder that there is a great deal of good work happening every day at the grassroots level, and it deserves to be celebrated.
