2026 Alberta Winter Games and Milano Cortina Olympic Games

The 2026 Alberta Winter Games will be held February 13–16, 2026, in the Lakeland Region of Alberta, with competitions taking place in the communities of Bonnyville and Cold Lake. The Games will host competitions in 18 sports, bringing together over 1600 youth participants from across the province. Zone 1 will be represented by 194 participants, including 108 from Lethbridge and nearby communities. A list of local athletes is included with this release.

The Alberta Winter Games provide an important development opportunity for young athletes, offering exposure to a multisport environment while supporting skill development, confidence, and sport pathway progression. The Alberta Winter Games program is proud to count 50 alumni who have gone on to represent Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The 2026 Olympic Winter Games will take place in Milano Cortina, February 4–22, 2026. One confirmed Canadian athlete with local roots is Taylor Austin, a Lethbridge-born bobsleigh athlete. Austin made his Olympic debut at Beijing 2022, racing as a pilot in both the two-man and four-man events. Originally recruited to bobsleigh after playing football at the University of Calgary, Austin progressed through the North American Cup circuit, earning multiple overall titles before making his World Cup debut in 2022.

Susan Eymann, Lethbridge Sport Council executive director said, “It’s incredibly special to be celebrating the Alberta Winter Games at the same time as the Olympic Winter Games. The Alberta Games are an exciting starting point, offering quality competition, exposure to a multisport environment, and friendships that last a lifetime. It’s where young athletes begin to see what’s possible.”

The first Alberta Winter Games were held in 1976 in Banff. Lethbridge has hosted the Alberta Games multiple times, including: 1981 (Summer), 1990 (Masters - cancelled), 1996 (Winter), 2001 (Seniors), 2009 (inaugural 55+ Winter), 2012 (Summer), 2015 (55+ Winter), 2020/2021 (Summer - postponed then cancelled)
